# Computer Suggestions for New Students --- When choosing a computer for a new student, it is important to look at the proposed major of the student. An Engineering student is going to have different requirements than an English student. --- ITS suggests reaching out to the Department of the student's major in and ask if there are any specific requirements for a computer. --- The only suggestion we make to every major is no Chromebooks. Chromebooks cannot install software; they can only install Google Chrome extensions. If a student needs to download software for a course, it is very highly likely that they will not be able to access it on a Chromebook.
