Teacher Education Program Handbooks Theses handbooks are to help students navigate the rules and regulations of the Teacher Education Program from admittance to Residency. Teacher Intern Handbook Teacher Intern Handbook This Handbook is prepared for the information and assistance of teacher education candidates at Arkansas State University. The policies and practices presented herein supersede all previous revisions. This handbook is one way of communicating the policies, procedures, and roles/responsibilities of teacher interns, clinical supervisors/mentor teachers, and university supervisors. The purpose of this handbook is to strengthen the teaching internship experience for all stakeholders. Residency Handbook Undergraduate Residency Handbook 2026-27 Graduate Residency Handbook 2026-27 The year-long residency is an integral component of the teacher education program and crucial to the preparation of future teachers. This handbook is one way of communicating the policies, procedures, and roles/responsibilities of residents, EMTs, and USs. The purpose of this handbook is to strengthen the residency experience for all program stakeholders. The handbook provides resident-specific policies and procedures; however, this is not an exhaustive list. Arkansas State University (A-State) Residents are acting as school district employees and must adhere to all district policies. Failure to meet expectations, as outlined in the Residency Handbook, including excessive absences, may disqualify a Resident from meeting the requirements of this program and, therefore, will prevent the Resident from obtaining an Arkansas teaching license. Residents may request special consideration for extenuating circumstances from the Residency Coordinator and the A-State Educator Preparation Provider (EPP) as needed. Admission to the Teacher Education Program All Teacher Education majors must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program through the Professional Education Programs office. Candidates may not enroll in designated professional education courses—marked with an asterisk in the Undergraduate Bulletin—until they are formally admitted to the teacher education program. Once the Professional Education Programs Director approves the application, candidates will receive an official email notification. Admission does not guarantee continued enrollment; candidates must meet all retention checkpoints and demonstrate ongoing academic proficiency, moral responsibility, emotional stability, and professional growth. After completion of all requirements, everything will be reviewed by the Professional Education Programs office. If any part is missing, the student will receive an email stating the missing requirements. If all documentation is accounted for, the student will receive an official acceptance letter via email. If your licensure status has not changed from pending to approved after 4 weeks, please reach out to Mrs. Woolard at swoolard@astate.edu. When this process is complete, you will be able to print your license from your Arkansas Department of Education AELS account and begin your career as a teacher. At A-State, your graduation checklist identifies the areas in which you are qualified to seek licensure. Please reach out to your advisor, department chair, or the licensure specialist if you have questions. Areas for licensure can be added later, but it requires completing another online application, etc. Please apply for and secure your license as soon as possible because licensure requirements change from time to time, and if you wait, you may be required to complete additional work. Out-of-State Licensure To verify that an applicant can be recommended for licensure in another state, he/she must be eligible for professional licensure in the state of Arkansas. It is in your best interest to get licensed in the state of Arkansas before you seek licensure out of state. Whether you’re exploring majors, looking for a job, or recruiting top talent, they're available to help. It is suggested that you include recommendations from a major instructor and your Experienced Mentor Teacher(s). Requesting recommendations should be done before you graduate, as people sometimes relocate or retire, making it difficult to obtain them later. It is also suggested that you keep your file up to date by periodically adding recommendations from your employer.
