Institutional Animal Care & Use (IACUC)
REMINDER: We now use Cayuse as our protocol management software. For information about Cayuse, please click here .
Institutions that use animals for federally-funded laboratory research must appoint an Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) that reviews research protocols, conducts evaluations and inspects animal facilities biannually. The IACUC reports to the NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) annually, and is issued an animal welfare assurance number authorizing the conduct of research that uses animals. The IACUC is required to report significant noncompliance with animal use protocols, as well as any actions taken to correct identified problems.
Investigators who include animals in their research protocols must successfully complete Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) training for animal care and use training and responsible conduct of research. Then, the investigator must submit a protocol and obtain the approval of the IACUC before work can commence. Protocols require full committee review at a convened meeting of the IACUC at least every three years. To submit a protocol to the IACUC, please log into Cayuse Human Ethics (formerly Cayuse IRB) to create a new study, create an initial submission, and complete the application. If you do not know your Cayuse log in information, please email CayuseIRB@astate.edu (Please note: The name of the software is Cayuse Human Ethics, but it serves our IBC and IACUC committees, as well.)
