Involvement by University faculty and staff in political campaigns is entirely appropriate and reflects the fact that the University is a center of lively debate. Active people inevitably play important roles in discussion of public policy questions. While involvement in campaigns is appropriate, the following guidelines must be adhered to:
- Personnel should not use University offices, equipment (telephones, computers, typewriters, etc.), and supplies in conjunction with a political campaign.
- Those involved in campaigns should make it clear that they speak as individuals rather than as representatives of the University.
- The activities should not interfere with the regular teaching, research, service or advising responsibilities of individuals.
- Placing political advertisements of any kind is prohibited on state-owned property. This includes automobiles, building interiors/exteriors, and grounds.
