Theatre Scholarship/Auditions

  • Maintain an academic mentor from the Theatre faculty
  • Maintain a 3.0 (or higher) grade point average in Theatre department courses
  • Be involved in at least three Department of Theatre productions each year through the practicum program.
  • Acting and musical theatre emphasis students must audition for all productions.
  • Participate in each end-of-semester evaluation.
  • Attend any guest workshops provided by the department.

  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early (in person or online).

Scholarship Audition Guidelines:

  • Your selection must be from a published play.
  • Select a piece that is age-appropriate (a character you could play today).
    • Avoid material with extremely high emotional demand or excessive vulgarity.
    • Find material that is compelling but authentic (using your natural voice; no accents).
  • Your monologue needs to be memorized.
  • Physically, vocally, and mentally warm up before your audition.
  • Arrive at least 15 minutes early.
  • Come well-groomed and wearing professional attire.
    • Wear clothing that isn't restrictive or uncomfortable. Simplicity is best!
  • When you hit your mark, breathe. Then slate.
    • "Slate" refers to how you introduce yourself and tell us the piece you're performing, including the play and playwright.
    • Ex.: "Hello! My name is Jane Doe, I'm 18, my pronouns are they/them, and I will be performing a monologue from Sweat by Lynn Nottage."
  • Your monologue should fall between 30 and 60 seconds.
  • Be professional and courteous from the moment you step into the building; you're always auditioning!
  • Avoid miming, using, or bringing any props.
  • Never apologize for your audition. Unless you tell us, we'll assume that's exactly what you meant to do. Audition with confidence!
