University College – Student Learning Outcomes

First Year Experience

The following outcomes describe the expected competencies for students completing the undergraduate First Year Experience program.

  • Institution Engagement – First year students will have a reasonable understanding of the underpinnings of the institution including resources, policies and organization and how to best navigate within the system.
  • Academic Engagement – First year students will know how to develop and manage study habits to master new learning.
  • Community Engagement - First year students will have a sense of belonging (socially, emotionally, or cognitively) to the campus community.
  • Personal Engagement - First year students will have a practical understanding of and commitment to degree completion.

General Studies

The following outcomes describe the expected competencies for students completing the undergraduate General Studies program.

  • BGS Students will be able to espouse the general principles within each of their chosen emphasis areas.
  • BGS Students will develop a practical and professional skillset including reading, writing, communicating, and basic computer proficiency.
  • BGS Students will prepare for career readiness by gaining an understanding of workplace dynamics in relation to professional settings, organizational roles, etiquette, leadership strategies, and decision processes.
  • BGS graduates will demonstrate the ability to think critically and creatively.

Interdisciplinary Studies

The following outcomes describe the expected competencies for students completing the undergraduate Interdisciplinary Studies program.

  • BSIS Students will demonstrate critical thinking through analysis of their own position in relation to complex contemporary issues facing individuals, communities, and societies.
  • BSIS Students will develop core leadership skills through exploration of social, ethical, and emotional competencies
  • BSIS Students will understand the role of social change by broadening awareness of diverse people, cultures, and ideas related to social justice in local, national, and global communities.
  • BSIS Students will be able to apply the tenants of Field of Interdisciplinary Studies to their professional opportunities.
  • BSIS Graduates will be able to synthesize knowledge and concepts from multiple perspectives to formulate interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving and decision‐making.
