Using McGraw Hill Connect in Canvas

🔍 What Is McGraw Hill Connect?

McGraw Hill Connect is a digital learning platform that provides course materials, assignments, and assessments designed to support instructor-led courses.

🎓 Instructor Tools and Course Resources

Connect includes a wide range of built-in instructional and course management tools:

  • Prebuilt course materials aligned with textbooks
  • Test banks and question pools for assessments
  • Presentation slides, media, and instructor resources
  • SmartBook adaptive learning tools
  • Reporting tools for student performance and engagement

These resources are available within the Library or Instructor Resources sections in Connect.

Connect can be used independently or integrated with Canvas, depending on how an instructor chooses to manage their course.

✅ Using Connect with Canvas

When integrated with Canvas, Connect allows instructors to:

  • Assign homework, quizzes, and adaptive learning activities
  • Provide students with access to course materials and eBooks
  • Sync grades automatically with the Canvas gradebook
  • Streamline student access through a single course entry point

ℹ️ Integration with Canvas is recommended when you want Connect activities and grades managed within your Canvas course.

🔐 How Connect Access Works

You can access Connect either:

When using Canvas:

  • Students complete a one-time account linking process
  • After setup, assignments launch directly from Canvas
  • Access may require:
    • An access code
    • A purchase
    • Inclusive Access enrollment

ℹ️ If Connect is used without Canvas, all content and grading remain within Connect.

❓ Common Access Considerations

  • Students must register and enroll in the correct course
  • Common issues include:
    • Incorrect account/email
    • Missing or invalid access codes

📘 Canvas Student Registration Guide

On the first day of class, limit student registration questions by sharing this video or PowerPoint, or by embedding within Canvas. Choose whether you have Inclusive Access or regular deep integration.

🛠️ Notes and Limitations

  • Grade sync requires Canvas integration (LTI Advantage)
  • Older course links may not function after copying a Canvas course
  • Access and licensing are managed by McGraw Hill, not CETL

✅ Adding Connect to Canvas (LTI Integration)

To use Connect in Canvas, your Connect course must be paired with your Canvas course using the McGraw Hill Integration (LTIA).

🔁 Step 1: Create or Prepare Your Connect Course

Before pairing, decide whether to:

  • Create a new Connect course
  • Reuse an existing course

✅ Recommended: Duplicate an existing course before pairing.

This allows you to:

  • Preserve previous content
  • Reuse assignments and structure
  • Make updates safely for a new term

🔗 Step 2: Pair Connect and Add Assignments

Pairing your course and adding assignments are completed within the same workflow.

✅ Steps (High-Level)

  1. Go to Modules in your Canvas course
  2. Locate the module where you want to add McGraw Hill content
  3. Click the Options menu (⋮) for that module
  4. Select McGraw Hill Integration LTIA
  5. Choose Connect (you may also see GO or SIMnet)
  6. Launch the McGraw Hill tool
  7. Select one of the following:
    • An existing Connect course (recommended if duplicated)
    • Create a new Connect course
  8. Complete the pairing process
  9. Select and deploy assignments from Connect into your module

ℹ️ Assignment configuration (questions, attempts, grading) is managed entirely within Connect.

⚠️ If You Copied a Canvas Course

If your Canvas course was copied from a previous term and included Connect links:

  • You may need to remove existing Connect assignments before pairing
  • Older links—especially from non–LTI Advantage integrations—will not connect to the new Connect course

✅ After removing old links, complete the pairing process and add new assignments using the integration.

📘 How Connect Activities Appear in Canvas

When you add Connect activities:

  • The item appears in the selected Module
  • A corresponding entry is created in Assignments
  • Grades sync to the Canvas gradebook

📊 Step 3: Grading and Reporting

  • Grades are recorded in Connect and sent to Canvas
  • Canvas displays grades but does not control grading logic
  • Connect provides detailed reporting, including:
    • Assignment statistics
    • Item analysis
    • Student performance insights
    • Identification of at-risk students
